Archaic Christmas

Every year, the small community of ‘Momârlani’ from Jiu Valley, Romania, celebrates Christmas in a unique way and they have been doing this for hundreds of years. On the 24th December they call themselves ‘Piţãrãi’, being the first announcers of Christmas. Dressed up in traditional clothes, they go from house to house in their villages, singing and dancing, being rewarded by the hosts with apples, walnuts and ţuicã, a Romanian traditional spirit.

Leaving consumerism and contemporary Christmas traditions behind, the ‘Momârlani’ still have a good and healthy sense of family and community, keeping their culture alive at least through celebrations like Christmas.
